Why not spend your money on these things?

Hi gang! Got loads of money? Yeah, me too. Let me tell you about some cool stuff I bought lately. Maybe if you dig the sound and vibe of these items then you could check them out too. These lil’ doolallies have become as essential to my life (and my `cool’ image!) as Fonzie’s bike and Fonzie’s leather jacket have become to the Fonz (aka Henry Winkler!)

Nikon’s D40 DSLR camera. I’d always thought that Digital SLRs were a rich man’s game, the kind of thing that only Ron Howard could afford. But I picked up this budget model for £250 on Amazon, and it gives you all you need (if, like me, you know bugger all anyway and can only vaguely conceptualise missing stuff like Depth of Field indicators). Only downsides are – it’s only 6 megapixels (if this even matters, my phone gives 5 megapixels but the pictures are still only as `good' as the previous model's 3 megapixels, but the file sizes are heading for 1.5 meg), and autofocus won’t work on old lenses (the motor is in the supplied lens, not the camera). But I love manual focus, I’ve never had it before. Anyway, so now I’m taking some unbelievable pictures. Rock on.

The iPod touch. I don’t have an iPhone yet (sort of have a loyalty to T-Mobile, but have no idea why, they’re a German conglomerate so who gives a shit?) , but bought this last year as a substitute. Over the year it has become more and more amazing – it’s my web browser of choice when I’m at home, and the App Store is totally addictive – if you’re prepared to pay 60p for an App then they can be really great. I like the free brain mapping software thing which really helps unscramble my thinking, and the pure genius of game Flight Manager - where you draw flight paths to land increasingly crowded skyfuls of planes. I also love Stanza, a free e-reader that lets you download the Guardian in full every day, lots of public domain books, and some new ones from Random House – all for free (you can pay for books too if you wanna). Great for reading in bed. The iPhone is probably the one to go for, as then you get web access when you’re away from wi-fi, and there’s a camera on it, and a neato implementation of text messaging. But the iPod is smaller, and definitely the best gadget I’ve ever had.

There you are punks, £400 for the lot.

  1. I am a gadeget bore, so don't get me started on this! However. I have the iPhone but it is an early one so is very memory lite and is not 3G so i can't use some of the more fantastic apps. My current fave apps are iFart, Old Booth, Tris and Remote which will play my music from my itunes anywhere in the house! BRILLIANT.

My current photo weapon is a Canon Eos 400D but I have upgreded the lens to a 28-135mm zoom with image stabilisers, and it is 72mm diameter, so it makes you look really cool on holiday. I need a new flash gun but am a bit worried about spending the "correct cash" on something that I may not use that much.

BUT> My new most favourite toy is my new Carrera mountain bike. It has suspension forks that can lock off, and so many gears I didn't know which button to press. I now cycle to work, as I signed up to the fantastic cycle2work scheme and have bought this £500 bike for £250. Get whatever grants you can now before the Tories get back in. I wonder if they can give me a grant for a new 3G iPhone?

My wife buys shoes, so many that I am embarressed, she is embarressed about my gadget addiction also. Hey-ho. It could be worse I could be spending money on gambling or crack cocaine.

  2. Your mountain bike sounds great!

Maybe you did get early adopter punishment for leaping in with the iPhone. But it's still great, the operating system upgrades have been cool, and Flight Control is highly recommended from me. Now to get iFart!

I don't understand girls and their shoes. I don't particularly like buying them - I get black chelsea boots from this shop in East Finchley, and Converse. That's it. The idea of getting some flashy Patrick Cox footware is completely out of the question. Especially with so many gadgets out there.

  3. Yeah the bike is great, going down Hopwas Hill at top speed first thing on a sunny morning is pure joy, weeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
The thing I've found about girls and shoes is that apparently they like them so much is because they believe they always make them look good, as opposed to a wrong dress which can make your bum look big, your feet very rarely look fat in a pair of Jimmy Choos. I wonder though if my ankles will look fat in a pair of 18 hole doc marten boots?

Got Flight Control. Will give it a go later on.
