Death of Grass

Anyone remember this book - we did with Geoff Williams in (I think) second year. Midge was particularly keen on it. Well it's been serialised by Radio 4 for broadcast after Woman's Hour, and again in the evening, narrated, oddly, by David Mitchell. I remember GW stopping half way down a page, skipping forward a couple of chapters and saying 'right, turn to chapter five'. At the time I thought he was just being lazy, or missing out padding, but actually it's extremely violent, and he must have been censoring this, as I don't remember any of it. Today's episode contained both rapes and revenge killings....

  1. Funny,
I was thinking about Thee Death of Grass last week. I was telling George about it, telling him he would like it. Didn't know it was being serialized on R4.Of course anything you tell your 12 year old he would like is sure-fire way of him never reading it. I've often wondered about GW over the years, what was his home life like, that sort of thing, also same about Westlake. I remember him showing us his collection of (pretty good) slide photos of Gothic cathedrals around Europe, and I was really impressed. He was usually just so weird, and this one lesson he really came alive. I've often wondered about him. By the way, Mol and Papa, were they really "bummers"?
